That Time We Interviewed Kevin Smith
“Ya ever notice how 'Friends' episodes titles start with stupid 'That time or That Episode?' I bet you in 20 years some buffoons who never liked the show start an article about Kevin Smith the same way” – Jerry Steinfeld
8/23/2022 - Dan B.
As I was perusing the old Schroeder 'zine's web site like the nostalgia driven washout I am, I came across “news.html,” where we brought our minuscule and potentially nonexistent fan base updates about what where were doing. Here's what was unearthed:
Schroeder - 5/12/97 First official "Schroeder news". Issue three was out in a limited run for about a week, before we noticed some major errors in it. Will be reprinted in a week, with some editting to do. This thursday, we will be interviewing director/writer Kevin Smith (of Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy), upcoming interviews with Inspecter 7 and Mephiskapheles as well. The "Ska-Tones", a band founded by Tim, Dan (both of the Schroeder), and Lord Steev (of Lord Steev and The Echoes, on Skarmageddon 3) had it's first barbeque. Look for upcoming news about them. Tim almost killed a kid at a mall who made a joke about him being a SHARP. That's it for now, check back later for more updates.
Yup. Movie mogul Kevin Smith, in 1997, right out of Redbank, NJ where he was answering the line at his own comic depot, "Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash." We spoke to Kevin Smith briefly, and Tim asked him if he was a Luke Skywalker guy or Han Solo guy, to which he confirmed “Han Solo.”
His assistant told us he would set aside time to conduct an interview with him, and that he “liked supporting these sorts of things.”
Well, it turns out they never gave us the interview and stepped on our grapes like tourists at a vineyard.
That said, I was able to salvage some segments of a pre-interview, and to that I proudly bring you:
**The Schroeder 'zine Interviews Kevin Smith!!!!**
Tim: Hello?
Clerk's Director: Yes, who is this?
Tim: My name is Tim. We write for a zine and would like to do an interview.
Clerk's Director: Oh ok, let's set something up. Call my assistant at xxx-xxx-xxxx.
Tim: Great, thanks! One quick question, Luke or Han Solo?
Clerk's Director: Han Solo, more of the rogue archetype.
So there you have it, words from the man himself before he'd go on to Hollywood and become even more really fucking famous!
